True Story: How a Little Art Bribery Enhanced Student Engagement and Success in Tutoring
A regular private student of mines was having a rough day. These types of days had been getting frequent for her and had been affecting her desire to do work. She is on the spectrum, too, so her rough days can feel...a lot. And no matter what she did or said, her mother couldn't move or convince her to sit down for class. I could hear my student's distress, the tiredness and just being DONE.
Like, DONE done.
Fed-up done.
I’m not sitting down even for candy, done.
What could I do?
So, I waited a moment and asked if she would like to draw with me. Anything her heart desired (within reason), I would draw it for her. I've never seen her move so fast. It was like she teleported and all her attention was immediately on my screen.
I asked her what she would like to draw.
She said, “A unicorn.”
Luckily, that’s my forte.
Of course, I was inspired by my students own hair style, so we did pigtails with beads. She picked the colors. We chatted about what the Unicorn should wear. What evet she was going too. And the socks she NEEDED for her pink shoes (medium high heel). Her mood changed for the better.
She called her “Queen Orange Sparkle”. And then we did Math (which she did really well on).
Could you believe that ART completely changed her energy, her mood, to be more focused and engaged in class? What a vibrant color palette and a playful imagination can do for a student who has academic struggles.
